The two main Cayes/ Beaches to stay at are CAYE CAULKER and San Pedro/Ambergris Caye. San Pedro is large and full of city life, a lot of buildings and is very busy. But, I recommend spending most of your vacation at Caye Caulker. It is truly a paradise. It is not as busy as San Pedro, but still nice and friendly. It’s extremely cheaper in Caye Caulker and more of a paradise than most beaches. It’s not as crowded and I think it’s easier and more relaxing. The hotels and motels are cheap, since US money is doubled there, but go online and check for yourself to be sure. I’m sorry to tell you that you cannot rent a motorcycle at Caye Caulker, but you can rent bikes, jet skis, canoes, and golf carts (they don’t drive cars). Since everyone enjoys different experiences, i suggest you look up both Cayes on Yahoo! or Google to be sure. Which ever Caye you go to I am sure you will have a good time. I’m a Belizean. Lived there for the past three years and went for all my summer vacations since birth, so I would know. HAVE FUN.
PS – Make sure when you go, you look for JUNI’S SNORKELING at Caye Caulker. It looks like a small house but go and talk to Juni Zaldivar and arrange a tour with him. You will have the experience of a LIFE TIME, i would know, he is my Uncle. so even if it is to check it out, talk to him. You’ll thank me.

bookit.com has really good deals for hotels and other vacation packages. book a little in advance so that they aren’t out of rooms because i think bookit.com only has access to a few rooms for discount at a time.

  3. San Pedro is NOT much more expensive than Caye Caulker in general. People just seem to think that.

San Pedro is not a city, it’s a town of about 7,000 to 8,000 give or take. Yes it’s busier than Caye Caulker but it’s hardly a city.

The Beaches in Caye Caulker are in no way better than the ones on Ambergris Caye, in fact I have yet to find a beach in Caulker as nice as the Ramon’s Village stretch of beach just south of San Pedro town, or the Banana Beach Resort/Banyan Bay Resort stretch of beach (called Mar de Tumbo) just a little further south on Ambergris Caye.

Hotels are more expensive on Caulker in general with less amenities. You can get a Private Room with Private Bath, AC, Cable TV, Free Wifi at a hotel with a swimming pool, bar & restaurant, security and discounted trips, tours and diving for $50 US per night (regular rate) at http://www.pedroshotel.com.

I paid 80 US per night in Caulker for a room with less amenities IN SLOW SEASON about a month ago.
