Well…best way is to drive if your friend has a car. If not, then you take a bus from Belize City to Chetumal, Mexico. This is about US$6 one way. Ask the bus driver to drop you off at the Chetumal bus station. Then there are really nice express buses going from Chetumal to Cancun. I think its about US$20 if my memory serves me correctly. Really nice trip.
More advanced purchase you can have = cheapest airfare.
Car is 2nd option – not too far really. Probably a georgeous ride.
